In the plumage of the canaries we make a distinction between the feather types: 1. intensive feathers 2. non-Intensive feathers, also called buff,     frosted or powdered feathers The special feature in the canaries is, that these factors are present in both the male and the female, but the colour of the female is not as intensive as the male. Due to this, an experienced breeder can distinguish the sex. A very good intensive coloured male shows no brightening at the tips of feathers, specifically in the feathers of wings, tail and under parts. In the non-intensive canaries the lipochrome pigment stops just short of the margin of the top of the feather giving the canaries a lightly frosted appearance. The following photo cut-outs of the plumage try to show the differences.

The following recommendations for

mating canaries are given:

When mating canaries intensive x intensive occurs the lethal-factor and 25 % of the chicks will die. As with the crested canaries and the white dominant canaries is the intensive factor also a dominant factor. In addition, if you mating intensive x intensive canaries you will get only 25 % as a result of intensive birds and also 50 %  non-intensive (frosted) Birds. Recommended is the mating of canaries intensive x non-intensive. The result are 50 % intensive canaries and 50 % non-intensive (frosted) canaries. The mating of canaries non-intensive x non-intensive has 100 % non-intensive canaries as a result.
