History of Rasmi Boland Canary

An Iranian Type Canary

The known recognized Type Canary breeds have their origin almost in European countries. Only the Japan Hoso and the Makige are outside of Europe, developed in Japan. Interesting is that in Iran since decades a new type canary breed is developed – The Rasmi Boland, also called “Persian Canary” or “Persian Rasmi”. It is not so much written about this breed, if at all in a script unreadable to us. In the Persian language "Rasmi" means traditional. The Rasmi boland joins a list of unofficial (yet not recognizedby the Ornithologique Mondiale/C.O.M.) approved type canaries, such as the Stafford Canary (UK), the Columbus Fancy Canary (USA) or American Singer Canary (USA) First the Rasmi Boland resulted over colour canaries and different type canaries, which came from Europe and also Russia in the Iran. Unfortunately, the exact time of presence cannot be determined. According to the reports, the new race was available in all colours, include pied, with a size of 15 cm. These breed had a appearance like an earlier Yorkshire, but the difference was seen in some parts, such as head and special tail form  and length.
In the 80th some Yorkshire Canaries  and Lancashire Canaries arrived to Iran, which was used for the further development. The Yorkshire with a narrow body was crossed to get a bigger body and also the Gibber Italicus was already crossed in the past for get a smaller body and stronger legs. Thus, the breeding goal of the Iranians is already clear: There should be a new breed, with elongated and narrow body. But the results were not to the liking of the Iranian breeders. Only a selection from the pairing of the crossed bred brought the first desired results. That's how the Rasmi Boland or translated: "the Elongated Traditional" was created.
But it must also be mentioned that there also is another traditional breeding - Rasmi Keshideh”. The features are the same except for the body size and tail length. But the professional breeders give the favor to the longer Rasmi Boland, with an total length of minimum 21 cm and a tail lengt of minimum 12 cm. With a total length or minium 21 cm, are the Rasmi Boland and the Italian Giant Frill (Arricciato Gigante Italiano/A.G.I.) the largest canary breeds. Unusually in comparison of western breeders it is that despite the acquired breeding goal still the original version and also another revised version of the Rasmi Boland are bred and liked. At present, the Rasmi is the most bred in Iran and enjoys ever increasing popularity in many neighboring Arab countries such as Qatar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq and also the Turkey. Such as in the Western countries the Rasmi Boland is exhibited and judged and for a top bird will be willingly paid several 10,000 $. However, a further development not stopped. Through strict selection is a clear distinction from the known elongated breeds, such as Yorkshire Canary, Berner Canary and Llarguet Español intended. This distinction alone is confirmed by the total length.
