“Red Factor Birds” is the collective

name for birds with a red colouring in

the plumage caused by red carotinoids.

The red colouring can extend over the whole plumage (e.g. red canaries, flamingos) or only in some or small parts of the plumage (e.g. bullfinch, common redpoll, gold finch, cardinals etc.). The intensity of red colouring caused by consuming on a diet with carotinoids. In the captivity occurs the success of a perfect colouring in every case under a dietary control. It is known, that for wild birds in the nature in addition to lower amounts of canthaxanthin also astaxanthin, adonirubin, α-doradexanthin and papilioeritrinone are in every case the dominant carotenoids in the plumage pigment. Wild birds find the right food instinctively by themselves. Carotenoids for wild birds are found in berries, beets, squashes, tomatoes, cherries and many other berries or fruits. For the bird breeders or bird keepers is it not easy to administer the right diet for captivity birds with the Red Factor without a artificial colouring.
