THE WATERSLAGER

CANARY

History and General of the

Waterslager Canary

The waterslager canary is also an old breed of a song canary. The history of the waterslager canary tells that about three hundred years ago a traveller from France in Belgium noticed the “watery” song of some song canaries near the Belgium city Mechelen. These special song canaries was presumably crossed by very special large kind of yellow-grounded canaries, also called "The Old Dutch". From these Old Dutch canaries the waterslager canaries inherited the colour and the special shape. The name of the waterslager varies: Waterslager Canary, Belgium Waterslager Song Canary, Waterslager Song Canary, Malinois Canary or Water Singer.  All this names will always stand for the same kind of song canary. Modern Belgium waterslagers are bred mostly for their water notes; while in Holland the nightingale and steel notes are preferred. However, all waterslagers by definition must sing water notes. The term “waterslag” literally means “water beat”. The waterslager canary has been most popular throughout its history in Europe and is growing in popularity all over the world. The United States, Canada, the whole Arabic countries, Japan and also Thailand have enthusiastic water- slager breeders and keepers. The waterslager canary is a song bred rather than for its special shape or colour. Like a Harzer roller canary the waterslager canary will sing with its beak closed, but will also open it for some pronounced sounds. The song of the waterslager canary must have the sounds of notes like "water dripping into a barrel" or he will not be accepted as a true waterslager canary. They also have the lowest and highest range of notes of all song canaries.

Are Belgium Waterslagers

really hearing impaired?

German researchers at the University of Regensburg have figured out, that the Belgium waterslager canaries partially lose the voices heard after birth. First, it was assumed that the Belgium Waterslager are already born with a hearing impairment, as the song of Belgium waterslagers is relatively loud. Experiments of the scientists showed that the voices heard of the Belgium waterslager after hatching is still alright and the hearing loss occurs later. The hearing loss of the Belgium waterslagers occurs during the time when they learn to sing. That should probably be the reason for the fact that the singing of the Belgium waterslager after learning of the special waterslager song is relatively loud and deep, since according to the scientific test high and low voice tones are hardly or probably not noticed by the Belgium waterslagers. As the reason for the hearing loss is the longtime selection of the Belgium waterslager for the special quality of the waterslagers song accepted.
